Romanian environment minister Attila Korodi said Thursday the zoo in Bucharest would not be shut down, but will see investments
Bucharest Zoo Stays Open – Minister
The minister said the zoo is expected to meet European Standards by summer and would get a five-year environmental approval.
The minister said Tuesday that the ministry would fund the rehabilitation of 14 zoos in the country, while 18 others, including the zoo in Bucharest, would be closed for non-observance of all requirements, moving thousands of animals to other zoos.
Out of 32 zoos in Romania, 14 will be rehabilitated by 2012. Romania’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development approved, in a government decision, the allocation of RON130 million to rehabilitate zoos in Oradea, Brasov, Resita, Turda, Craiova, Galati, Hunedoara, Targu Mures, Slatina, Ploiesti, Radauti, Timisoara, Barlad and Ramnicu Valcea.
The funds allotted by the ministry will be divided nearly equally to cover 75% of rehabilitation costs for all the 14 zoos. Local authorities are to pay for the remaining 25%.
