"I won’t comment on the president’s decision. The Government tried to say that this hike is not sustainable. I observe all this country’s laws,” Anton said.

Asked whether the Education Ministry can afford the wage raise, Anton said that is a good question for those who initiated the law.

The president on Friday said he promulgated the law raising teachers’ wages by 50% as of October 1.

Labor minister Mariana Campeanu also declined to comment on the president’s decision to pass the law but said she will take it as such.

Campeanu added she expects wage hike demands from other public sector employees in the upcoming days.

"I have no comment whatsoever. This is the president’s will. We’re waiting for the law to be published in the Official Gazette. The Prime Minister has stated the Government’s point of view,” Campeanu told MEDIAFAX Friday.

Campeanu also denied rumors that the government is working on an ordinance to repeal the law.
