According to the local county Inspectorate for Emergencies, there were 24 children, seven chaperons and the bus driver in the vehicle, all Hungarian tourists visiting Romania.

Exiting Miercurea Ciuc, the driver saw smoke coming out of the engine, stopped the bus and evacuated the passengers immediately.

The fire-fighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Preliminary investigations indicate the fire was caused by a short-circuit in the electrical installation. Eighty percent of the inside of the bus was destroyed in the fire.

Traffic was blocked in the area for half an hour and the bus passengers left for their destination on another bus.
