The sources added that Bucharest Police started procedures to have a European arrest warrant issued for the businessman.
According to unconfirmed reports, Savulescu is currently in Monte Carlo. The businessman received five years and six months in prison from the country’s Supreme Court, as he was charged with involvement in a scheme which saw several strips of public land in Constanta county, including beaches, illegally retroceded to private companies.
Another international arrest warrant in the case will be issued for Radu Mazare, who was sentenced to nine years in prison. The former mayor has been living in Madagascar since 2017, when he fled the Romania because of other corruption charges. Mazare filed for political asylum with the African state.
Among other high-profile culprits sentenced in the case, former FC Dinamo Bucharest investor Cristian Borcea has been incarcerated on Friday, while former Constanta County Council President Nicusor Constantinescu was already serving a different five year prison sentence for abuse of office.
