Poor Air Quality In Bucharest Killed Over 800 People Btw 2004-2009

Over 800 Bucharest residents, who died between 2004 and 2009, could have been saved if the average annual level of fine particles found in the air had been kept within the limits set by the World Health Organization, shows a research conducted by an NGO.

According to the research, 227 infants who died in the aforementioned interval could have been saved if the average annual level of PM10 (fine particles) had been reduced to 20 µg/m³.

The study revealed that the level of PM10 and PM2.5 (dust of different size) in the air exceeded recommended limits.

The research was conducted by center for durable policies Ecopolis and entailed monitoring air quality in Bucharest in 2010, based on data collected by eight air quality monitoring stations.
