Prime Minister Discusses Sentence Compensation Bill With Justice Minister

The subject gained traction in the public sphere recently as it was announced that hundreds of convicts who benefitted from reduced sentences due to the bill were returned into police custody shortly after for other offences, some of them violent.

The bill effectively subtracts six days from prison sentences for every 30 days served by inmates held in conditions which are not up to par with EU standards.

During an intervention in the European Parliament on Tuesday, PM Dancila pointed the blame for the bill on the 2016 technocrat government of Dacian Ciolos, stating that the bill was initiated then and that it was an “uninspired decision”.

She also said that she will discuss the subject with Justice Minister Tudorel Toader on Wednesday.

The minister, also a critic of the bill, said early on Wednesday that the Justice Ministry disagreed with the bill and considered it unconstitutional.
