Eastern Romanian City Bacau In Quarantine Over Rabies

Veterinary authorities in Romania’s eastern city of Bacau decided to institute quarantine in the city over several outbreaks of rabies among stray dogs.

By Monday, some 60 dogs were euthanized at the local animal shelter.
 
Since the beginning of the year, 33 rabies outbreaks were reported in the county of Bacau, the bulk of which were among foxes and stray dogs.
 
The most recent case of rabies was reported at the animal shelter in the city of Bacau.
 
Authorities decided to euthanize the dogs in the shelter to stop the virus from spreading, said the local veterinary department manager, Vasile Zaharia.
 
Zaharia added the city and neighboring localities are in quarantine for three months.
 
The shelter in Bacau currently houses some 20 animals.
