In January-October last year, Romania registered 100,098 used cars and 259,154 new cars, according to data provided by the Romanian department for car registrations and driving licenses.
The total number of cars, both used and new, registered in Romania in the first ten months increased 27.4% from the same period last year, to 458,021 cars from 359,252 cars, boosted exclusively by imports of second-hand cars.
In October alone, the number of new car registrations in Romania decreased 10.7% on the year, to 27,376 cars, while registrations of used cars increased 139%, to 36,747 cars.
Data indicate the Romanian used car market continues its sharp growth of over 100%, a trend that started in the second half of the year, when the government introduced the pollution tax on cars, which is considerably lower for used cars than for new ones.
Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Wednesday evening the government is considering a set of measures to curb the effects of massive used car imports, which have a major impact on the business of local carmakers. Tariceanu said, however, that the government will not eliminate the pollution tax on new cars as an incentive.
People close to the matter said the prime minister is considering altering the calculation base for the tax, but they added such a move might prompt the European Commission to pursue infringement procedures on the country for its car tax regime.
