Basescu also said he is displeased with the European Union’s involvement in the Transnistrian issue.
„Romania took part in negotiations, but withdrew due to an error of the Government that ruled the country back in 1991. It shouldn’t have stepped back, but hold on and advocate the Republic of Moldova and its territorial integrity,” Basescu said.
Asked if the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU would be possible if issues regarding conflicts in Transnistria are not solved, Basescu said the EU has already learnt its lesson the hard way by accepting Cyprus with un unsolved conflict, adding one of the EU’s principles is not to import such conflicts.
Basescu added the EU and the U.S. must show more perseverance in clarifying the situation in Transnistria. The Romanian president also said he is unhappy with the way the EU participates in solving the conflict.
