Borbely said the issue is worrisome but he is waiting for official information.
„I don’t know whether this issue is urgent at this time. Obviously, several countries are involved or wish to host such storage facilities. (…) We haven’t received any official notice or request in this respect,” Borbely said.
The minister said he is reserved and is awaiting official information on the matter.
„Obviously, environment minister, I’m the one who will see to it that environmental standards are strictly observed,” Borbely said.
In its online edition Wednesday, The Times wrote high-level nuclear waste from across the European Union could be shipped to eastern Europe for burial in a central underground storage facility under plans being considered by EU member states.
Discussions are under way between eight countries – the European Repository Development Organization which includes the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Bulgaria – about transportation and storage of waste, the paper wrote, adding the organization is due to meet again in May.
