Romanian President Traian Basescu said Wednesday that he has requested preventive measures against the risk of increased terrorist activity, as a result of the UN's intervention in Libya.

The president said he made this request in the meeting on the Romanian Intelligence Service’s activity in 2010. He warned that the intervention might cause instability in northern Africa, attracting extremist Islamist groups engaged in terrorist activity.

Romania will not be a major target of terrorism, but preventive action should be taken, said the president.

Basescu said the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) had, in 2010, its best performance so far, but should continue to reform and adapt to Romania’s new needs in „the information era.”

The President thanked SRI director George Maior for resisting every attempt to influence the Service’s activity from the outside.
