Censorship, Threats - Common Practice Among Romanian Democrat Liberals: Romanian MEP

Romanian democrat liberal MEP Cristian Preda said Friday that censorship, the lack of respect for dialogue, threats, double-meaning statements, defiance towards certain forms of expressing opinions, such as blogs, are a common practice within the country’s Democratic Liberal Party.

Preda said, during a meeting with the Democratic Liberal Party's Youth Organization, that facts within the European People's Party are totally different, as members respect each other and encourage dialogue.

The Romanian MEP said he has been a member of the party since last year, but he was never asked for an opinion on any of the issues discussed by democrat liberals.

Preda said there are two kinds of politicians and political organizations: those who believe that any decision should be debated and encourage dialogue, and those who fear discussions and consider that important issues should be approached behind closed doors.

Preda stressed that the way in which debates on the country's austerity measures were carried out are an example of dialog improvisation.

The Romanian Government had its austerity plan challenged with the Constitutional Court which ruled pension cuts unconstitutional. Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Friday the Government has prepared an alternative package of measures to reduce the budget deficit. These measures will be discussed with the IMF, European Commission and the World Bank. Boc did not say whether this package includes VAT and flat tax hikes.
