Under the Constitution, Romania holds presidential elections every five years and general elections every four years.

At a meeting with democrat liberal leaders on Sunday evening, Basescu put on the table several Constitution revision propositions, which he wants to send to the Parliament.

„I wanted to start a debate,” he told TVR, adding he received a Constitution revision draft from the Government, but that only included the results of a referendum held in 2009, when Romanians voted to make the country’s Parliament single-chamber and reduce the number of lawmakers to a maximum 300 from the current 471.

„I believe there are still many things that need to be changed and returning to a four-year presidential term would be beneficial. Romania currently has local elections one year, European Parliament election another year, parliamentary elections another year and presidential elections yet another year,” Basescu said, adding Romania could use fewer election years.

„I’d like for us to find a solution and hold parliamentary and presidential elections at the same time again. I’m willing to shorten my term as president if all political parties agree to this change,” said the head of state.BUCHAREST
