He said the an old gas pipe cracked, leaving Caritas Hospital without heat or hot water and requiring the intervention of gas supplier E.On Gaz.

Savu said there was no panic among the patients. They were picked up by Bucharest emergency service ambulances, 20 of which were dispatched to Caritas Hospital. Savu said the hospital could be reopened as soon as the leak is fixed, however the patients will not be brought back, but will remain in the other hospitals until they are checked out.

Fifteen newborn children who were in the hospital’s maternity ward are being transferred to three other hospitals with neonatology departments, together with their mothers.
