Romanian Liberals Say New Foreign Affairs Minister Should Be Diplomat

The leaders of Romania’s National Liberal Party (PNL) back the idea of appointing a diplomat as the country’s new foreign affairs minister, following the resignation of Adrian Cioroianu, according to sources within the party.

The quoted sources said Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu might also rule out politicians for the position of foreign affairs minister, adding secretary of state Victor Micula would be the best solution in this respect, considering that he successfully handled the organization of Bucharest-hosted NATO Summit early April.

Liberal sources also said they might meet Sunday evening to analyze the situation and identify potential nominees for this position.

Liberal defense minister Teodor Melescanu Saturday said he would be the most suitable to take the helm of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, adding he is aware he simply cannot do everything.

Romanian foreign affairs minister Adrian Cioroianu said Friday evening that he presented his honorary resignation, as a result of the Crulic case.
