According to the mayor of the commune where the accident occurred, Vasile Ivan, villagers in the area immediately began digging a ditch to stop the oil from reaching the Virtej river. He added that the oil reached four farmlands, two household and one fishing lake belonging to one of the locals.

Representatives from the Arges county Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) said that after the Wednesday accident oil pumping through the pipeline was halted, and restarted Thursday afternoon. Soon after the oil flow was resumed, the pipe cracked again, some eight kilometers from the area in which the Wednesday accident occurred, said lieutenant colonel Virgil Craiu from ISU Arges.

According to Craiu, the quantity of oil leaked through the crack is small, compared to the previous day, and the oil flow was once again ceased.

When this article was published, locals and firemen were intervening to collect the oil spilled from the pipeline.

In this case, representatives from the Romanian Environment Guard were notified, as well as the pipeline owner, Romania’s largest vertically integrated oil company Petrom.
