Marinov Zikolov Was Military Attache With Bulgarian Embassy

The Bulgarian Ambassador to Bucharest said Wednesday that Marinov Zikolov worked as a military attaché with the embassy from November 1998 until mid-2000, and that he did not finish his term because he returned to Bulgaria where he became a businessman.

The official said he had met with Marinov Zikolov’s family and that he will provide the required legal assistance. The ambassador added that, until proven otherwise, the Bulgarian citizen is considered innocent and that the Romanian authorities will establish the facts.

The ambassador pointed out that Zikolov is not connected to any Bulgarian institution; he is just a business man and a private person. The official also said that this case is “unfortunate”, “remote” and “unrepresentative of Bulgaria”.

Marinov Zikolov was arrested together with a non-commissioned officer of the Romanian Defense Ministry, Florinel Achim, for 29 days; they are charged with treason through the giving away of state secrets and espionage, in that they handled information with the aim of jeopardizing national security.
