According to a press release posted on the website of the Presidential Administration, the head of state signed the "Decree submitting to Parliament, for ratification, the Lisbon Treaty amending the Treaty on the European Union and the Treaty instituting the European Community, signed in Lisbon on December 13, 2007."

The Treaty was signed by President Traian Basecu, Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu and Foreign Affairs Minister Adrian Cioroianu, together with the leaders of other EU member states.

The signing of the Treaty is followed by a process of ratification by the Parliaments of European states.

The Treaty is a moderate version of the European Constitution, which targets the creation of a more efficient foreign policy and a more democratic decision capacity.

The half-yearly presidencies of the European Bloc will conclude with the new treaty and they will be replaced, in 2009 with a long-term president of the European Council, who will chair summits. The Treaty will also consolidate the function as Foreign Policy representative of the European Bloc.

The Treaty will also allow decision making through majority vote, especially in matters involving justice and security, and it will grant greater powers of decision to the European Parliament and national Parliaments.

The Government approved the draft law ratifying the Lisbon Treaty on December 19, 2007.
