The toll for the crossing of the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge at the border between Romania and Bulgaria will be lowered by 30% as of January 1, 2009, said Friday Stefan Szobotka, communication manger of the Romanian national roads and highways company, or CNADNR.

The current bridge toll for cars is EUR6, a six-month pass costs EUR700 and a one-year pass is EUR1,170. For microbuses and buses, the toll is EUR28, while vehicles weighing over 12 tons are charged EUR43 or EUR5,000 for a six-month pass.

"The 30% toll cut was decided following negotiations between Romania’s transport minister Ludovic Orban and Bulgaria’s transport minister Peter Mutafciev,” Szobotka said after a seminar on transportation issues.

The Giurgiu-Ruse bridge is being used since 1954 and is the only one that connects Romania and Bulgaria over the Danube river.
