Nonetheless, the economic scenario for the first quarter can go either way, because uncertainty regarding recovery in some sectors remains high, central bank’s deputy governor Cristian Popa told a seminar.

„I believe (the economy will grow in the first quarter), but we talking about a central scenario, with uncertainties on both sides,” Popa said. He added a possible growth will be modest.

Popa said he is both „optimistic and reserved” regarding the full-year economic evolution, particularly since the „2010 quarterly design clings on a weaker-than-anticipated fourth quarter in 2009.”

The Romanian economy declined by 7.1% in 2009, after a robust growth of 7.1% a year earlier.

For 2010, the authorities forecast a growth of 1.3%.
