Romanian Mayor Sentenced To Two And A Half Years In Prison For Corruption

Liberal Cristian Anghel, mayor of the northern Romanian city of Baia Mare, was sentenced Wednesday to two and a half years in prison for corruption, Cluj Court of Appeals spokeswoman Claudia Ilies said.

The spokeswoman added the sentence is final and binding.

Judges impounded the mayor’s assets, as he has to pay the local mayoralty EUR394,000.

Anghel was indicted by anticorruption prosecutors in September 2007, on charges of influence peddling. He was accused of overvaluing a building in the city that the city hall bought and thus defrauding the city hall’s budget of nearly EUR400,000.

Anghel has been mayor of Baia Mare for several consecutive terms since 1993. He is also the head of the county branch of the Liberal Party, in opposition.
