Romanian Parliament’s Legal Committees To Complete Report On Uninominal Voting Sys

The leaders of the Romanian Parliament decided Monday that the committees for legal matters must debate the law introducing the uninominal voting system, for which the government assumed responsibility, so that the law will be in agreement with the decision of the Constitutional Court.

The committees are expected to complete their report by Thursday.

Bogdan Olteanu, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, said that the members of the committees within the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies would debate this report Wednesday and Thursday.

In December 2007, the Constitutional Court accepted President Traian Basescu’s appeal and declared unconstitutional the provisions of the law introducing the uninominal voting system.

Thus, the Parliament must re-examine the respective provisions, within 45 days after the court’s decision has been  published in the Official Gazette, so that the provisions will be in agreement with the court’s decision.
