City halls in several Romanian cities neighboring the river Jiu received a code red warning on the danger of floods on the lower course of the river, starting with Monday afternoon, until Tuesday at noon, according to the National Administration "Romanian Waters."
Code Red For Flood On Romanian River Jiu
"As a result of heavy rain falling so far, the rain forecast and the abundance, for the period of time between November 19 and November 20, 2007, there will be significant climbs in water levels, possibly going over the danger levels on the river Jiu, between Racari and Podari. Cod orange becomes code red for the mentioned river on the mentioned segment," said a warning issued by the Romanian National Institute for Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) sent, Monday, to central authorities that might intervene in such situations.
In addition, the code yellow instated by authorities, on the Gilort river, becomes code orange on the upstream Turburea sector.
The warning is a "nowcasting" type, reflecting the evolution of hydro-meteorological phenomena on short term and in small areas. The document was sent by hydrology specialists to the Ministry of Environment and Durable Development, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the National Administration "Romanian Waters," the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform, electrical company SC Hidroelectrica SA and the Jiu and Olt county water administrations.
