According to Water Management System Mehedinti director Adrian Draghici, the slick was discovered around 8 a.m. local time and was found to be 20 meters long and 15 meters wide. Several minutes later, border police officers spotted the slick downstream, between km 928-921, Border Police spokesman Valeriu Pera said.

Several Water Management teams monitored the river in order to find the track the slick and use neutralization agents. A mobile laboratory was also dispatched to gather samples and ascertain the nature of the pollutant.

The slick eventually dispersed, due to the river’s high flow, Draghici said. The area’s flora and fauna were unaffected.

Draghici said there is a possibility of the Danube overflowing, but for the moment a flood is unlikely.
