Romania 09 Jan-Oct Trade Gap, Sixth Biggest In EU

Romania registered the sixth largest trade deficit in the European Union bloc in the first ten months of 2009, with both exports and imports falling compared to last year, EU’s statistics office Eurostat data showed Friday.

Non-seasonally adjusted figures indicate Romania’s trade deficit for the first ten months of last year shrank to EUR7.9 billion from EUR20.2 billion in 2008, but data indicate exports and imports were 18% and 36% weaker on the year, respectively.

In November, seasonally adjusted data showed Romania’s trade gap narrowed to EUR0.2 billion, from a deficit of EUR0.3 billion in October.

The European Union’s trade balance posted a deficit of EUR5.8 billion in November last year, from a deficit of EUR24.4 billion in the same month of 2008. In October, the EU’s trade gap was at EUR4.8 billion.

In the January-October period, Germany posted the biggest trade surplus in the EU bloc, of EUR105.2 billion, followed by Ireland (EUR32.6 billion) and the Netherlands (EUR32.1 billion).

At the opposite side, the U.K. reported the sharpest trade deficit (EUR77.9 billion in January-October 2009), followed by France (EUR42.5 billion) and Spain (EUR40.7 billion).
