The agency manages both European Union funds for the agriculture sector and state funds assigned to farmers.

The agency’s deputy general manager Mariana Draghici took over as interim head of the agency following the resignation of general manager Dan Gherghelas on February 12. Draghici will run the agency until a new contest to fill the position of general manager is organized on March 25.

The previous contest organized late February lured no contenders whatsoever.

Gherghelas said in February, after agriculture minister Ilie Sarbu made some very harsh remarks regarding the agency, that he cannot put up with “political decisions concerning strictly technical issues.”

Sarbu said in February that 2008 subsidies per hectare should be paid starting March 19.
