Three In Five Romanians Believe Mass Media Are Independent – Survey

Three in five Romanians believe mass media in their country are independent, according to a survey conducted by sociological research company CCSB and ordered by NGO “Pro Democratia.”

According to the survey, 62% of Romanians believe mass media are independent, while 31% say the opposite.

Of those questioned, 69% believe mass media in Romania serve people’s interests, while 27% say the opposite.

Asked about the importance of mass media for democracy, 58% of respondents said mass media are „very important”, 28% said they are „pretty important”, 8% stated they „are of low importance”, while 3% said mass media „are not at all important”.

According to the survey, 71% of respondents said TV is, in general, the main source of information, 13% mentioned the Internet, 9% the printed media, while 6% the radio.

Almost half of Romanians believe politicians „never think like regular people”.

The survey was conducted between September 23 and 28 by CCSB on a sample of 1,017 people, with an error margin of +/- 3.1%
