Former Romanian MPs Set Up NGO To Defend Their Rights And Explain Parliament’s Role

The Association of Former Members of Parliament has its headquarters in the Palace of Parliament and is made up of “people with experience in Parliament, maturity and who want the best for the country,” according to Vasile Radulescu, the Association’s president.

Radulescu said the association’s purpose is to be an active component of the civil society and help voters understand the Parliament’s role and mechanisms. The association intends to issue opinions in the adoption of laws and a possible Constitution revision.

Marcel Chiritescu, one of the association’s founding members, said the civil society must have a say in politics and that he will not stand for the Parliament being undermined by the Government and President.

The Association of Former Members of Parliament has nine founding members, including Ion Basgan (former Liberal Party senator), Marcel Chiritescu (former National Salvation Front deputy), Corneliu Ciontu (former Greater Romania Party and later Conservative Party deputy), Gheorghe Glavan (former National Salvation Front deputy), Maria Lazar (former Social Democratic Party deputy), Vasile Radulescu (former National Salvation Front deputy) and Gavrila Vasilescu (former Conservative Party senator).

The members of the Association said they do not see an incompatibility between their being members of political parties and in a non-Government organization and that they will be “apolitical” in the Association’s activities.
