Chitac’s lawyer Alice Draghici said her client is due back in prison on December 18 when the court’s decision to discontinue his sentence for three months, between September 18 and December 18, expires.
On September 18, 2009, Chitac was released for three months on medical grounds, while former general Victor Athanasie Stanculescu, who received a similar sentence for the killing of civilians in 1989, went back to jail.
The Military Court also decided in June this year to discontinue Chitac’s 15-year prison sentence for one month, to allow him to undergo surgery.
On October 15, 2008, the Supreme Court sentenced former high-ranking generals Athanasie Stanculescu and Chitac to 15 years in jail each.
Chitac and Stanculescu were first sentenced in 1999 on aggravated murder charges for ordering troops to fire on demonstrators in Timisoara city, western Romania.
In December 17-20, 1989, security forces fired at civilians, killing 72 people and injuring 253. A woman was run over by a tank in the city and 43 people were severely beaten by security forces.
