The minister assured Sibiu county councilors, called in Friday to approve the takeover of the county’s hospitals by the local authorities, that the Government and Health Ministry would pay the hospitals’ debts within 90 days, the legal limit.

He also explained there would be no change in the way hospitals are financed, so local authorities will not have to foot the bill.

Despite the minister’s assurance that the debts would be paid, the Sibiu councilors voted not to take over the hospitals before the debts’ exact amount is determined.

The Sibiu County Hospital owes 19 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2375), including RON4 million since 2005.
