Romanian Govt Can’t Afford Not To Assign 6% of GDP To Education – Minister

Romanian education minister Ecaterina Andronescu said Tuesday after a meeting of social democrat ministers that the government cannot afford not to grant the education sector 6% of the gross domestic product.

Andronescu said the country’s education law stipulates the sector should get 6% of GDP.
 
"I don’t think we can play with this 6%, which is stipulated in the education law. This percentage must be introduced in the state budget. I don’t think we can afford to even think about not assigning 6% of GDP to education,” she said.
 
Asked whether she is certain the final draft of the 2009 state budget will include a budget of 6% of GDP for education, Andronescu suggested the draft drawn up by the government could be amended in Parliament if the funds assigned are insufficient.
