Romanian Govt Lowers No Of Layoffs At Forestry Auth, Extends Restructuring Process

The number of employees to be laid off by Romania’s forestry authority following property retrocession will be lowered to 4,240 people from the initial estimate of 7,048, and the authority’s restructuring process will be extended two years, until end 2010, according to a draft government decision.

The draft act amending the law regarding social protection of laid off Romsilva staff also moves back the completion of the institutions’ restructuring process to end 2010. The initial term had been the end of the first quarter of 2007 and was later moved back to end 2008.

Romsilva fired 798 employees in 2006, 1,075 employees in 2007 and will fire another 550 by the end of this year. The remaining 1,817 employees will be laid off until the completion of forest restitutions to former owners, namely 603 people in 2009 and 1,214 people in 2010.
