Late April, Nati Meir was placed under preventive arrest for one month in a corruption case that also involves his son, who had been arrested a week before. Subsequently, a court extended their arrest by 30 days.

Meir, a former lawmaker and presidential hopeful last year, has been in custody since October 2009, having been indicted for forgery, possession and circulation of forged currency. He was sentenced in early March to four years in prison for deception and tax evasion in a case for which he was indicted in 2006.

The politician’s son was arrested after he was caught rapid with EUR20,000, with which he was allegedly supposed to persuade certain magistrates to repeal an arrest warrant and issue lighter sentences in a criminal suit.
