“The papers to buy shares in Rapid were signed. The deal was not made public yet, due to the incidents during the match against Steaua. It was not a good moment to make the announcement (…),” Taher said, mentioning he is not the new owner of the club, but shareholder associated with Copos.

Taher did not disclose the deal’s value.

Taher said Razvan Lucescu and Ioan Ovidiu Sabau are considered to replace coach Mircea Rednic, who resigned following the incidents during their match against Steaua Bucharest last week.

Rednic said Monday on the football club’s official website that if he hadn’t resigned, the team, himself, players and fans would have had to lose. He added he was intent on leaving after the match against Universitatea Craiova.

Rednic said he would resign Thursday after the derby against Steaua Bucharest was abandoned in the 74th minute, when central referee Alexandru Deaconu was hit by an object thrown from the home side fans’ area.

Deaconu ended the match after he was hit on the head, with Rapid leading 1-0 after a goal scored by defender Cristian Sapunaru.
