According to Kalfin, the funds were allotted through the ISPA (Instrument for Structural Policies for Pre-Accession) and to aid in Schengen Area integration.
„A total of EUR 27.5 million from the money for Schengen entry preparation will be taken away from Bulgaria and Romania,” said Kalfin, adding that another EUR4 million in structural pre-accession funds will probably not be given to Bulgaria.
The EC Representation in Bulgaria said such resource reallocations are done at the end of every year. Whenever a member state attracts fewer funds than planned, it saves the EU taxpayers’ money.
On Monday, Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said the government had succeeded in attracting 100% of the funds earmarked for Bulgaria through the Schengen instrument.
