The Administration of Navigable Canals forwarded a proposal to the Transports Ministry to resume works at the Canal and the institution drew up a draft decision to be presented to the Executive.
The general manager of the company, Ovidiu Cupsa, said the canal would enable Bucharest to obtain a direct navigable link with all Romanian cities on the Danube, with the important urban centers on the Rhine, as well as direct access to the Constanta maritime harbor and the European network of navigable routes.
The Danube-Bucharest Canal is a 73 kilometer-long canal project, with a minimum depth of 4.5 meters and a transportation capacity of up to 16 million tons/ year.
The canal will dispose of two harbors, one in the southeastern part of Bucharest and the second one at Oltenita, at the junction of Arges river with the Danube.
Transportation minister Ludovic Orban said the only option for developing the infrastructure in the next seven years is to resort to lease contracts. The minister said that the Danube-Bucharest Canal would be built using the same method.
The ministry official said works would be developed based on a feasibility study to be carried out in the following period.
In February 1990, the building of the canal was stopped, although it was 70% completed.
