The two prime ministers agreed to coordinate their countries’ efforts and jointly support joining the Schengen Area in March 2011, while rejecting any condition unrelated to the relevant technical criteria, the Romanian Government said in a press release. They also discussed opportunities for collaboration, with Borisov arguing that the Danube Summit makes it possible to put forward priorities for cooperation between riparian states, such as including tourism among the main issues of the upcoming EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
Romania is all the more interested in working with Bulgaria in this field, seeing as it holds a resource no other Danube neighbor has – the Delta, says the press release.
The two heads of government talked about connecting the two countries’ natural gas infrastructures, the Calafat-Vidin bridge over the Danube (under construction) and opening more border crossing points. The two states will seek financing for such projects, taking into account the possibilities afforded by the EU Strategy for the Danube, public-private partnerships or European financing.
