The measure, which is a strictly technical one, will be discussed Friday by the Council of Ministers, Rioja2 said on its website, adding government sources said the measure is to be enforced as soon as possible, most likely as of August 1, and to be re-discussed within a year.
Romania and Spain have decided to set up a joint government working group to manage the application of the restriction measure.
The Spanish publication also notes the measure has been criticized by NGOs in Spain.
Rioja2 also cited government sources as saying the measure would be lifted in 2014 at the latest.
Romanians constitute the biggest immigrant community in Spain and 861,584 Romanians live there, most of them in the Madrid region.
Spain plans to introduce labor restrictions for Romanians as it is facing an unemployment rate of 20%. Spanish authorities said the measure will not be applied retroactively so it won’t affect Romanians already working in Spain.
Spain is one of the few western European countries to open a wide part of its labor market to Romanians when Romania entered the European Union in 2007. The Spanish labor market was fully opened to Romanians starting January 1, 2009.
