Romanian Education Unionists On Warning Strike Monday, Threaten General Strike

Romanian education unionists are on a two-hour warning strike Monday, as a protest to the Government’s decision to delay the 50% wage hike until April 1, 2008.

Unionists affiliated to the federations Alma Mater, Spiru Haret and FEN are on strike between 12 and 2 p.m.

The education unionists will picket the Government building between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The unionists threaten the Government they will go on general strike for an unlimited period as of November 18.

The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the Government Ordinance 15 of January 30, 2008, hiking teachers’ wages by 50% as of October 2008.

The Government postponed enforcing the provisions of the law approved by the Chamber of Deputies citing lack of funds, which brought about the unionists’ indignation.

The Government decided on October 28 by Emergency Ordinance to prorogate the term for hiking teachers’ wages by 50% until April 1, 2009.
