Romanian PM Blames Former Bucharest Mayors For Delays On City Wastewater Purge Works

Works to build a wastewater purging station near Romania’s capital city Bucharest are nearly six months behind schedule mainly because the city’s former administration signed the contract for the project very late, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Friday.

Tariceanu visited Friday the construction site for the wastewater purge in Glina, just outside Bucharest, to check the stage of works and noted that according to data provided by the contractor, works are nearly six months behind schedule.

The contractor assured Tariceanu that works would be completed by end 2010, according to plan.

Tariceanu told reporters that delays are mainly due to the fact that the Bucharest mayoralty signed the contract for the works late, at the end of 2006, and added the former democrat-liberal administration’s “indifference” is condemnable.

The Bucharest mayoralty was run by acting President Traian Basescu in 2000-2004 and democrat-liberal Adriean Videanu, whom Basescu endorsed, in 2005-2008.
