Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu said Thursday that new Romanian missions in Iraq would focus on advice and assistance for Iraqi troops, not patrolling and security.

Melescanu said in a press conference that Romania is expecting a letter from the Iraqi Government, to learn if Romanian military presence is still required in this country.

"The Romanian troops’ mandate expires on December 31, 2008, and things will straighten out. The Iraqi Government will issue a document stating if Romanian military presence should be continued or discontinued, as well as potential missions involving Romanian troops," the minister said.

Melescanu added that, however, if Romanian troops remain in Iraq, their missions will involve advice and assistance for Iraqi troops, not patrolling and security.
