The decree had been disapproved by the Senate’s committee for labor matters and failed to garner enough votes Monday to be adopted or rejected.

The bill sets that mothers taking one year’s maternity leave shall receive a monthly child-rearing benefit of 75% of their average net income for the past year, but no more than 3,400 lei (EUR1=RON4.2350).

On the other hand, mothers taking two years’ maternity leave shall receive a monthly child-rearing benefit of 75% of their average net income for the past year, but no more than RON1,200.

In either case, the monthly benefit cannot be lower than RON600.

The bill was adopted tacitly and will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which has the final say.
