Romania To Allot RON900M For Flood Defense Projects

Romania’s Environment Minister, Laszlo Borbely, announced Tuesday that the Government would allot around 900 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2471) for flood defense projects, the largest amount for such a project in the last 20 years.

The funds will be used to pay for the construction and strengthening of dams.

„The money is there; we have to solve this problem once and for all,” said Borbely, adding that the money would be provided form the state budget, Environment Fund and foreign sources.

He pointed out that the decision to allot this amount was taken before the flooding which ravaged northeastern Romania the last weeks.

Borbely took part Tuesday morning in a video-conference with county prefects and heads of county councils throughout the country, hosted by Interior Minister Vasile Blaga.
