Romanian Presidential Election Final Results: Basescu – 32.44%, Geoana – 31.15%

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 32.44% of the votes in the first round of elections and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 31.15%, according to final results released Wednesday by the Central Electoral Bureau after the counting of ballots in all polling stations.

Liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.02% of the votes.

Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.56%), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (3.83%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.18%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.91%).

The other candidates earned less than 1%, according to the final results released by the Electoral Bureau. Green Party candidate Remus Cernea obtained 0.62 %, socialist Constantin Rotaru – 0.44 %, independent Eduard Manole – 0.35%, Ecologist Party candidate Ovidiu Iane – 0.23% and independent Constantin Potarca – 0.21%.

Voter turnout was of 54.37%, which translates into 9,946,748 voters.

Null votes totaled 227,446, or 2.28%.
