Foreign Min: Romania Will Not Grant Visas To All Moldovans
The minister stressed the issue of Romanian citizenship for Moldovans triggered many questions, even if not "officially", adding that Romania already provided thorough information in this respect.
"We already provided thorough information regarding this law last week. However, a series of information regarding citizenship applicants was misinterpreted," Diaconescu said.
The minister said he presented a series of elements regarding this law and stressed the law regulates the regaining of Romanian citizenship.
Asked to comment on potential visa requirements for Romanians by the Moldovan authorities, the minister said Romania never meant to bring bilateral problems on the agenda of a general affairs council.
Mid-April, President Traian Basescu told the Parliament he asked the government to amend the Law on citizenship immediately, so that people of Romanian origin who live in neighboring Moldova can obtain Romanian citizenship at a swifter pace, upon request.
Basescu said at the time that the Romanian embassy in Moldovan capital Chisinau received 650,000 envelopes with application forms for Romanian citizenship and estimations show the number of actual applications is of at least 800,000 or one million.
