He added that after fleeing the country, the Syrian remained in "contact" with politicians, with whom he communicated or sent his driver.
"He sends his driver from one to another, and he is received. He has communicated (with politicians – e.n.)," Basescu added.
The president said Hayssam, "this seriously ill man who is know in perfect health", was operated for cancer in the hospital of the Jilava prison by doctor Mircea Beuran, "the great surgeon who cures cancer even in jail.”
Basescu added people seem to have forgotten the fact that until 2004, used to ride in the presidential airplane.
Earlier Friday, Basescu noted at the public ministry activity report meeting that the media reported extensively on how “a terrorist”, Hayssam, left the country “like a gentleman”, when in fact he fled “crawling among sheep”.
The head of state said this case is sprinkled with political interests that entail misinformation.
Syrian businessman Omar Hayssam, sentenced to 20 years in jail for his involvement in the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005, told prosecutor Ciprian Nastasiu on the phone that he fled the country off Otopeni international airport near Bucharest, “like a gentleman”, under an assumed identity and a new "look".
Several phone tappings between Hayssam and the prosecutor were declassified by the Romanian Intelligence Service to be used as evidence in the trial of Mustafa Tartoussi, who allegedly helped him flee aboard his ship.
