Lieutenant-colonel Dumitru Chirita, head of the Romanian Center for the Training Of Mountain Gendarmerie Units, stated that between February 4 and February 22, the institution he runs will train canine units (composed of dog and trainer) coming from mountain divisions of the Romanian Gendarmerie.

The activity was coordinated by Jean Paul Ramond, from the French Gendarmerie Center for Canine Training, a structure specializing in such actions.

Canine units, brought in from Romanian counties Alba, Bacau, Brasov, Caras-Severin, Maramures and Suceava, have undergone initial training for two weeks, which involved the accommodation of the dogs – seven German shepherds and two Labradors – with the conditions specific to the cold season, after which, they have undergone specialized training, over a period of three weeks, in which they are taught how to seek out avalanche victims beneath the snow.

Chirita said that training will continue in the center he runs.

"There should be at least one dog for every mountain gendarmerie outpost, and there are 60 such outposts throughout the country, and one-two dogs in reserve within each gendarmerie section, while Romania has five mountain gendarmerie sections," Chirita said.
