Lamwakers voted 277 to five votes and ten abstentions to reject the bill.

„I urge you to think like Romanian lawmakers not like hairdressers who can’t sleep at night without hearing Marlon Brando’s voice,” said Socaciu.

Foreign films would be translated into Romanian through the dubbing technique and audiovisual watchdog CNA would see to it that the measure is observed, reads the bill drafted by Socaciu.

He said his proposition aims to „protect national identity”, arguing that film subtitling, which „introduces new words”, „deteriorates the language”. The social democrat lawmaker said dubbing will also make the film’s message more accessible.

The Senate is the deciding chamber for this bill.
