EC Acts To Ensure Romanian, Bulgarian Workers Treated Equally Across EU

The European Commission decided to refer eight member states to the European Court of Justice over their failure to comply with the amendments to Directive 2006/100/EC on free movement of persons following the accession of Romania and Bulgaria, EC said in a statement.

The Commission said Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg and Spain are yet to inform it of the measures taken to implement the Directive.

“The deadline for transposing Directive 2006/100/EC expired on 1 January 2007. The member states in question have still not brought into force all the necessary provisions,” the Commission said.

It said that as long as the eight member states do not implement the Directive into national law, Romanian and Bulgarian nationals risk “needlessly bureaucratic and slow procedures before being able to exercise their right to work anywhere in the European Union.”
