EC Closed Infringement Procedures Against Romania Over 112 Emergency No

The European Commission closed five infringement proceedings against EU Member States (Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Cyprus) after they took steps at national level to correct the problems, the Commission informed.

The commission also closed the procedures against Romania and Slovakia, where the caller location for the 112 emergency number was not available.

According to the EC, Romania confirmed recently its success in implementing caller location for mobile telephony networks.

In December 2008, authorities in Brussels said the European Commission might close the infringement case against Romania over the 112 single EU emergency phone call number in early 2009, following Romania’s success in implementing caller location for mobile telephony networks.

In September, EU gave Romania three months to implement caller location services for the 112 number, so that authorities in charge can trace calls from mobile phones.

Romania announced late November that caller location service is now available for mobile networks as well, information verified by EU experts.
